Dilip Kumar is widely considered to be one of the greatest actors in the history of Hindi Cinema. Kumar holds the Guinness World Record for having won the maximum number of awards by an Indian actor. He has received many awards throughout his career, including 8 Filmfare Award for Best Actor awards and 19 nominations. He was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. The Government of India honoured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 – the highest award for cinematic excellence in India. In 1980, he was appointed Sheriff of Mumbai, an honorary position. In 1991, he was awarded Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. In 1997, Kumar was awarded, Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest civilian award.

He received in 1997 the NTR National Award. He was also awarded CNN-IBN Indian of the Year – Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.

Dilip Kumar was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshawar, British Raj (now, Pakistan) to Lala Ghulam Sarwar and his wife. It was author of Hindi novels, Bhagwati Charan Varma who gave him the screen name Dilip Kumar and cast him as the main lead in his movie, Jwar Bhata (1944).

Dilip Kumar then went on to do a series of hit movies and among them was Devdas (1955). The movie was based on the novel by Bengali author, Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. In the movie, Dilip Kumar played the male lead role – Devdas.

The story of Devdas is set in a village and is about two childhood sweethearts – Devdas and Paro, whose friendship blossoms into love as they grow up. But as Devdas’ father does not approve of the couple, he sends Devdas away to Calcutta. When Devdas realizes that he cannot forget his Paro, he returns to the village, only to find Paro married to a much older man. He goes back to Calcutta where he falls into bad company and becomes an alcoholic consumed in the lust of Paro. He dies in the end still pining for his Paro.

Dilip Kumar played the part of Devdas so well that the name ‘Devdas’ was coined as a term for a depressed lover. He created a rage as the tragic hero and acted so intensely that the viewer could see the pain simmering in every part of the disheartened lover’s being. Whether it was scene where he teases Suchitra Sen (who played Paro) or the one in which he is drunk in his lust for Paro, Dilip Kumar’s acting was flawless. His performance in the movie was so impressive that Dilip Kumar had to try hard in his following movies to match the expectations that people had from him.

Dilip Kumar was awarded the Fimfare award for the Best Actor for his performance in the movie.

Dilip Kumar has been active in efforts to bring the people of India and Pakistan closer together. He has been a member of the upper house of Parliament since 2000.

He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. In 1998 he was awarded the Nishan-e-Pakistan, the highest civilian award conferred by the government of Pakistan. He is the second Indian to receive the award. At the time of the Kargil War, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray demanded Kumar return his Nishan-e-Pakistan, arguing that “He must return Nishan-e-Imtiaz following that country’s blatant aggression on Indian soil.”Kumar refused, saying

“This award was given to me for the humane activities to which I have dedicated myself. I have worked for the poor, I have worked for many years to bridge the cultural and communal gaps between India and Pakistan. Politics and religion have created these boundaries. I have striven to bring the two people together in whatever way I could. Tell me, what does any of this have to do with the Kargil conflict?”

Veteran star Dilip Kumar stepped out with wife Saira Banu at this celebratory bash hosted by Sunil Kapoor and Arun Chopra. The event saw an amalgamation of old traditions and new as Yash Chopra lit a lamp to mark the auspicious begining, while Karan Johar popped the bubbly making way for an exciting evening ahead, as he himself seemed to be in a rather cheerful spirit.
